Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN\-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN\-Habitat is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN\-Habitat works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities. UN\-Habitat promotes urbanization as a positive transformative force for people and communities, reducing inequality, discrimination and poverty. The UN\-Habitat Country Programme in Bahrain is supporting the efforts of the Government in achieving sustainable urbanization and harnessing on the power of cities as places of opportunities, inclusion and wellbeing for all. UN\-Habitat’s portfolio in Bahrain is increasingly connected to the climate agenda and focused on urban sustainability. With Bahrain’s most recent commitments to the climate goals and specially to reach net zero by 2060, key strategies are anchored in the implementation of the National Afforestation Plan (2022\-2035\) and its goal to increase the tree count from 1\.8 million trees to 3\.6 million by 2035, as well as quadruple the mangrove area. UN\-Habitat is supporting these efforts in several ways, including through building capacities, developing tools for the design of the urban environment as well as raising awareness. The overall goal of our work is to support the transition towards more sustainable and climate\-adapted urban systems, and to improve environmental quality by increasing the quality and use of green public spaces with direct effects on the health and wellbeing of the residents in the Kingdom of Bahrain. In implementing its projects, UN\-Habitat and its experts work with key Government institutions to plan, coordinate, implement, and support various activities related to the national programmes. The primary beneficiaries include government authorities and experts, decision\-makers, as well as the general public whose awareness is raised and living conditions improved. Responsibilities The intern will work under the supervision of the Head of Country Programme in Bahrain and project managers. He/she will engage on a regular basis with relevant institutions, partners, researchers, to ensure the activities are developed with the inputs of all relevant partners. The intern will be requested to perform the following duties and responsibilities: 1\. Understand the urban context in Bahrain and become familiar with the project portfolio of UN\-Habitat and its objectives. 2\. Assist in the compilation and review of available data and documentation related to the urban afforestation in Bahrain and other relevant areas of work as needed (parks and public spaces, land use, urban density, etc). 3\. Support the development of the National\-wide Afforestation and Public Spaces Assessment, guidelines, baseline studies, mapping, etc. 4\. Support the data collection on public spaces, smart cities applications as needed. 5\. Help with visual design work, mapping, and drawings and urban analysis. 6\. Work alongside the team to share input for awareness\-raising campaigns and contribute to community engagement events and trainings. 7\. Aid in the preparation of reports and presentations, taking notes as needed. Provide support and help as necessary in the preparation of new projects and assist in preparing information briefs, presentations and administrative papers work for these new projects. Qualifications/special skills Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Design, Environment Studies, Marine Studies, or related fields. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Experience in organizing, curating, and/or participating in events related to urban issues is desirable. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
